Courchevel Le Praz

Courchevel, the history of a village

WELCOME TO THE WORLD SKI CAPITAL

The story begins in the 1940s…

A small mountain village, where life could be tough and isolated, Le Praz did not seem destined for success. But local hero Jean Blanc, a three times world ski champion, saw the great potential of his village and the immense snow-covered plateaus of Tovets.

Alongside a handful of other visionaries, they took the crazy gamble of developing skiing in the valley.

Coming from the local Saint Bon dialect for the word ‘écorché’ the resort was renamed ‘Courchevel’ on 30 November 1946.

Following the installation of ski lifts and a cable car, the resort quickly saw its ski area expand. We must not overlook the role played by Mr Emile Allais, the sports director of the resort from the early days, who oversaw the creation of the grooming and maintenance of the slopes and the initiation of the ski patrol and rescue service.

For almost a century, the resort of Courchevel, created from scratch, has been developed to offer winter sports enthusiasts the very best conditions.

TOWARDS A LEADING STATION

What began as an exclusive movement has evolved and gained momentum over the years.

From the construction of traditional chalets to new ski lifts, restaurants and luxury boutiques, Courchevel has built a unique personality and reputation.

After hosting successive events such as the ski jumping of the 1992 Olympic Games, the Women’s Skiing World Cup, and very soon the drama of the 2023 World Championships with its main downhill event (a race which ends just few metres from the Chalets Tâmo), the resort and village of Le Praz are, without a doubt, a stronghold of the French Alps.

Today part of the largest ski resort in the world, with no less than 60 ski lifts, 93 alpine ski slopes and nearly 50 hotels, Courchevel is an international benchmark in the landscape of winter sports resorts and will delight all families and lovers of the ” white gold “
